What is RackMinder?
RackMinder helps you avoid driving a roof-mounted load — a bike rack, kayak, cargo box, or ski rack — into your garage or a parking deck. It uses a small Bluetooth beacon attached to your load, plus the garages you save in the app, to detect when you’re heading back to a garage with a load on the roof and warn you before you get there.
RackMinder works with a separately-purchased RackMinder beacon. Without a beacon, the app cannot detect a load.
Getting started
New to RackMinder? Our Setup Guide walks you through it step by step:
- Save your garages (home, work, anywhere you park under cover).
- Register your RackMinder beacon by scanning it once.
- Drive. RackMinder watches for the combination of “you left with a load” and “you’re heading back.”
There’s no account to create and no password to remember — RackMinder uses your iCloud account, and your garages and beacons stay in your own private iCloud.
Frequently asked questions
Do I need any special hardware?
Yes. RackMinder requires a RackMinder beacon (a small iBeacon tag you attach to your roof load). It is sold separately. iBeacon detection also requires a physical iPhone — it does not work in a simulator.
Why does RackMinder ask for “Always” location access?
RackMinder needs to notice, in the background, when you’re driving back toward a saved garage with a load on the roof — so it can warn you before you arrive. That background detection requires “Always” location permission. Your location is evaluated on your device and is never sent to us. You can review or change this in iOS Settings → Privacy & Security → Location Services → RackMinder.
Why does it need Bluetooth?
RackMinder uses Bluetooth to detect the iBeacon tag on your roof load. You can manage this in iOS Settings → RackMinder → Bluetooth.
I’m not getting an alert. What should I check?
- Confirm Location is set to Always and Bluetooth is on for RackMinder (iOS Settings → RackMinder).
- Make sure the beacon is attached to your load, powered, and registered in the app’s Beacons tab.
- Make sure the garage you’re returning to is saved in the Garages tab.
- Keep notifications enabled for RackMinder so the time-sensitive alert can appear.
Can I try it without a beacon?
Yes. The app includes a built-in demo so you can experience the full flow without hardware. Open the Settings tab, find the Demo section, and tap Leaving with beacon, then Approaching with beacon, then Arriving with beacon in order. You’ll see the app arm, hear the approach warning, and hear the arrival alarm — no beacon or driving required.
Will RackMinder alert me if my phone is muted?
RackMinder uses time-sensitive notifications along with an in-app alarm sound and a spoken warning. It does not override your device’s mute switch or Focus modes. Please keep your own attention on the road — RackMinder is a safety aid, not a guarantee.
How is my data handled? Can I delete it?
RackMinder has no account and collects no personal data on our servers. Your garages, beacons, and trips are stored in your own private iCloud account, which we cannot access. You can delete them in the app at any time, or remove the app and clear its iCloud data. See our Privacy Policy for details.
